De jure’ and ‘De facto

De jure and De facto:

 (used in English)

Pronunciation:

  • di-juri – ‘di’ as in ‘did’  -  (d)டிஜுரி
  • di-facto – (d)டிஃபேக்டோ

Exact meaning of the words

De jure    ::   According to law, rightful(ly) - சட்டப்படி(யான)

De facto  ::   In actual effect, existence, reality, force, vogue, possession and practice, or a ‘fait accompli’, legal or otherwise - whether by legal right or not, or right or wrong  –  நடைமுறையில் உள்ள, நடப்பின் படி, no matter சரியோ தவறோ, சட்டப்படியோ இல்லையோ!

Meaning of these two words is of overlapping nature. Sometimes the words are confusing and people treat them as ‘perfect synonyms’ to each other though there is an important shade of difference.

The striking difference between ‘dejure’ and ‘de facto’ - “De jure” means “according to law.” ‘De facto’ means it is in existence as a practice, due to manipulation, force, or compulsion, etc., not ‘according to law’.

The following example sentences will make it clear:

 De jure:

Palestinians registered as refugees can risk losing their de jure refugee status if they become naturalized citizens of another country.

In India, different forms of identification documentation are used, but there is no de jure National Identity Card as such, though ‘Aadhaar’ card, prepared and issued using a biometric, digital and physical identity system, still falls short of the NIC (National Identity Card).

De facto:

‘Kim Jong-un’ has been the de facto supreme leader of North Korea for years although he was never elected by people or legally appointed.

Currently there is a ‘de facto’ war taking place between the U.S. and China though the ‘de jure’ position doesn’t reflect it.

The difference between the two words:

If you talk to those at the top, you get the de jure (reality, as per law/rules) description instead of de facto (practical though not real and as per law/rules) explanation. Example - A 'de jure' government is the legal, legitimate government of a state and is so recognized by other states. In contrast, a 'de facto government is in actual possession of authority and control of the state.'
