APPRECIATION
From Sampath’s Desk:
APPRECIATION
Although
appreciation can be conferred on anyone, I am confining this piece to the best
performing employee(s)/team(s) of an organization.
Appreciation
is an invaluable gift which can be given freely provided you have an open mind
to praise others for their good works. The sweetest and the most melodious of
all tones and tunes is praise. A word of appreciation is real pep, perk and impetus to the
one it goes to besides being a motivating and inspiring factor to make the one
appreciated go hammer and tongs in the new tasks ahead with renewed vigour, revitalized
and intensified energy, uplifted spirit, jacked up morale and unflagging enthusiasm
to churn out still better performance and output. It costs nothing to the
person who appreciates others but it makes all the difference and means everything
to the person appreciated. It incidentally increases the ‘job satisfaction
quotient’ of the worker.
The deepest human craving is to get recognition and appreciation. In fact, it is a fillip to real performers. Even the smallest of a good work done deserves recognition. Mere social acknowledgements like ‘thanks’, ‘good work’, ‘excellent job’, ‘well done’, etc. also do the trick and impress the performer(s). A moment of gratitude makes a big difference in the attitude of the worker and lifts the giver up to a high altitude.
One
can be liberal in appreciating say like – “With a team like you around it is
only a failsafe and safe-sail for the management. You as a team are designed
for guaranteed accomplishment, endowed with dependable seeds sure to become
fruits of all seasons, reliable all-weather workforce to reckon with, ready to
rise up to any demanding situation(s), and well oriented and engineered for the
inevitable success.”
One
can’t always live on bread alone. You have to butter it also at least once in a
while. That is precisely the essence of appreciation certain to inspire people into giving splendid performances par excellence. And the appreciated people will reciprocate in many ways. The ‘Wow’
factor does wonders with employees. It is an inducement for making people shore
up their full potential and energy to scale newer heights in their performance. Expression
of admiration makes the trick and work wonders with the recipient(s).
More
than the monetary recompense, appreciation and praise on employees would
redound to the benefit of the organization. Suppose you have appreciation for
one at heart but failed to express, it is tantamount to taking a gift to whom
it is meant well wrapped but returning without giving it to him. Be open and
frank in appreciating.
Appreciations
like “With employees/team like you around, who are the epitome of
professionalism, it is a feel-good factor for the manager and management.
It is fantastic and brilliant you bring your best in every single work you do
in every single day”, are music to ears and make the meal yummy! While
appreciation is like a tree, acknowledgement, identification and recognition are
its branches. Your willingness to put it into words will complete the circle
and clinch the issue.
Without
underestimating or undermining the value of Vitamin-M, appreciation expressed
by the topmost executive in the managerial hierarchy ladder has its own
salutary effect on the persons appreciated encouraging them to go a whole hog in performance in the days ahead mustering a live volcano like zeal.
I took
pleasure while conveying profuse appreciation to good performers as the Secretary
to the Circle head of a telecom major in which I was working. While I enjoyed
drafting the appreciation letters, my co-employee Ms. Lakshmi chipped in with her rich contributions
of embellishment to the messages peppering them with water-marks, nice
eye-catchy background visuals and apt pictures carrying mind-catchy slogans
appropriate to the message content, adding spice and shine. I register my
praise and appreciation for her here.
There is a saying, “Praise loudly and blame softly.” Follow it. Let there not be a situation where “The worst person to be around is someone who always complains about everything and appreciates nothing.”

Super.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I had ever read about Appreciation was in Dale Carnegie's book ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People?’ It's one book that most of us would have read and tried to internalize.
The line which stands out and singles out the author is, "Be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise."
The entire chapter just flows down my memory lane.
Later, I found that most self-help books have a chapter devoted to Praise and Appreciation.
It's interesting, Sampath ji that you have chosen this topic. Yes Employees definitely need to be encouraged in simple words. The ones you have mentioned are enough. Sometimes a slight tap or simple pat on the elbow does the trick!
It's nice that Lakshmi was a rock solid support to you in this job in office. I have read several of her comments to your posts and I appreciate her efforts. Long Live Your Friendship!
The words in the first para last two lines really touched me, "that something might have been their everything." It just proves to me what a man of character and concern that you are!
As you have stated - rightly and clearly - we all need Appreciation. It's the Principle of Giving. Simple meaning is - You Give and you (or we) Receive!
I take this opportunity to tell you that I really appreciate all your articles. They have made me sit up and think loudly once again about my core competence. It has inspired me to read a lot more, and add new words and phrases in my writing. Several times, I go to your articles and pick some phrases here and there and use them to praise and appreciate people.
Thanks so much Sampath ji for your help motivation all the time
