Meaning:
To announce your intention of entering a competition or election
(mostly to spoil the chances of somebody else) – the fact or state of running
for office or seeking a position, title, degree, etc. – challenge somebody –
Nowadays it mostly means taking electoral plunge to gain posts and positions
Example sentences:
The deadline for candidates to THROW THEIR HATS IN THE RING closed
at 4 p.m. yesterday.
This year, many candidates have THROWN THEIR HATS IN THE RING.
As requested by me, he straightaway said that he would
play. I am rather delighted that he has finally decided to THROW HIS HAT INTO

true – A humorous phrase one may use and/or action one may take (something
extraordinary) if something is very unlikely to happen according to him – said
to suggest that you will be surprised if something happens

If we don’t win this basketball game by at least twenty points, I
will EAT MY HAT.
If he wins the election, I will EAT MY HAT.
