THROW THE HAT IN (INTO) THE RING:

 

Meaning:

 

To announce your intention of entering a competition or election (mostly to spoil the chances of somebody else) – the fact or state of running for office or seeking a position, title, degree, etc. – challenge somebody – Nowadays it mostly means taking electoral plunge to gain posts and positions

 

 

Example sentences:

 

The deadline for candidates to THROW THEIR HATS IN THE RING closed at 4 p.m. yesterday.

 

This year, many candidates have THROWN THEIR HATS IN THE RING.

 

As requested by me, he straightaway said that he would play. I am rather delighted that he has finally decided to THROW HIS HAT INTO THE RING.
