TALISMAN / AMULET - தாயத்து / ரட்சை - तावीज़ / जंतर

/ AMULET
தாயத்து / ரட்சை
तावीज़ / जंतर
Man is not only a social being but also a political being
from the cradle to the coffin. In this stiff, competitive world, he always wants
to win in all walks and facets of life. He always wants to be in a success
streak. Humans all across the world feel alike, in that, in addition to our sincere all-out efforts, there is something beyond it - an unexplainable force and effect - that we all call ‘good luck’ that clinches
success. Nobody puts up hard work just to fail in his/her activity or mission. Achievement
and prosperity are the ultimate goals.
Whether you call it a firm, deep-rooted, or unshakeable belief, strong conviction, unwavering faith, unassailable trust, etc., man believes it works. What I am talking about is the Talisman/Amulet (தாயத்து/ ரட்சை, तावीज़/ जंतर). Even if it is dubbed as a superstition, nobody minds. At the micro-level, one wears a sanctified slender thread - small yet long enough to round and bind the wrist at least thrice for a tight hold - preferably over the right wrist or below the glenohumereal joint (shoulder joint or more specifically, in the articulation between the humerus (upper arm bone) and the scapula (shoulder blade). At the macro-level, some suitable gems-studded chains (சங்கிலி) are also worn around the neck. Some others use locket-fixed, encased or embedded chains for the purpose. Blemishless diamonds yet with different background colour shades are also worn for specific purposes as advised. Wearing a Talisman around the ankle is very rare.
The practice of wearing them has been there from times immemorial, giving the man a lot of self-confidence, comfort zone, self-assurance, buoyancy, enthusiasm, resilience, and the like. Although one cannot prove it scientifically, it has the potential to create a comfort space and scope for success. Wearing the Talisman/Amulet is believed to increase the strength of a person, both physical and psychological, to go about his/her work with increased confidence for clinching success. They are considered to have the power to create intense and immense positive vibes around the users on one side, and defeat and demolish the evil forces operating against the users, on the other.
The
Talismans/Amulets have religious and divine connotations. Given by priests/saintly
persons mostly at places of worship with the
blessings of God, they lend credibility to the core. Or, some astrologers, prognosticators, and/or future/fortune tellers also prescribe suitable pieces for those who seek them to be worn as part of their chains and other jewels/ornaments. The wielders feel blessed
and graced by God for good luck and success. They are also worn for keeping the
evil eyes at bay, warding them off, and insulating the wearers against any
possible negative vibes, including the much-dreaded ‘black magic’, proving to
be a shield against curses and misfortunes.
Wearing Talisman/Amulet
is seen as a protective cover/cushion, power and transformation for the better, a strong
feeling of safety and security, a guard or bunker against deception, manipulation,
trickery, cheating, and the like.
While the effectiveness of wearing
them cannot be scientifically proved, only the users concerned will be able to experience the positive
factors flowing around to keep him/her in a protected cocoon.
No further elaborations need to be done, and stories narrated.
In a nutshell, wearing them gives individuals a ‘feel-good’ factor.

An interesting article. Yes, we are all bound by some beliefs which would have worked for us. Like you said its from cradle. Trying to ward off evil eye, we first tie a yelliw thread round the hip of a baby on punyavachanam day. It then progresses to black thread containing amulets in them. As we grow older, the talisman becomes a feel good factor as you rightly said. A very different and interesting article.
