Origin:

 

‘Behemoth’ comes from the Hebrew word ‘b'hemah’ meaning ‘big beast’. You can use it to describe large animals or large entities that make you feel small and powerless when you have to confront them. 

 

The word is always supposed to be italicized  ::   behemoth’

 

Pronounciation :: Be-hee-me(th) (‘be’ as in ‘bet’, ‘hee’ as in heed’, ‘me(th)’ as in ‘met’)      (b)பெஹிமெ(த்) - (th) and (த்) are pronounced half.

 

Literal meaning:

 

Someone or something unusually very large in appearance and powerful like a hippopotamus, a huge monster, anything or organization that  is gigantic  நீர்யானை போல மிகப்பெரிய மிருகம்.

 

The term can be used as an idiom also.

 

Example sentences:

 

  • The Internet, being an all-consuming behemoth that it is, contains several websites that offer free versions of online checkers.
  • Over the years, a number of companies have popped up in the hope to steal some of the limelight from other behemoth companies.
