LITTORAL states
LITTORAL states:
Pronunciation: li-ta-ral (stages) - லிடரல்
Meaning: Countries sharing
the coast / water territories of the same sea or ocean.
Examples:
India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Myanmar are the littoral
states of BAY OF BENGAL.
People of Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), the
Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietenam are the littoral states
of the SOUTH CHINA SEA.
Every littoral state has sovereignty over territorial waters as
mentioned below:
Nautical mile:
A nautical mile is based on the circumference of the planet Earth.
If you were to cut the Earth in half at the equator, you could pick up one of
the halves and look at the equator as a circle. You could divide that circle
into 360 degrees. You could then divide a degree into 60 minutes. A minute of
arc on the planet Earth is 1 nautical mile. This unit of measurement is used by
all nations for air and sea travel. A knot is a unit of measure for speed. If
you are traveling at a speed of 1 nautical mile per hour, you are said to be
traveling at a speed of 1 knot.
A simple definition is:
“According to the 1982 UN Convention, each country’s sovereign
territorial waters extend to a maximum of 12 nautical miles (22.2 KM – 13.8
miles) off its coast, but foreign vessels are granted the right of innocent
passage(s) through this zone. This starts from the baseline (usually the mean
low-water mark) of a coastal state. The territorial sea is regarded as the ‘sovereign
territory’ of the state concerned.”
