Pronunciation::  Oxi–moa-raan (‘oxy’ as in ‘Oxygen’, ‘moa’ as in ‘moan’ and ‘ron’ as ‘rock’)

 

தமிழில் – ஆக்ஸிமோரான்  (உதாரணம் - சுகமான சுமைகள்)

 

Meaning:

When we use two words or phrases with opposing or self-contradicting meanings, it is called Oxymoron. This is done intentionally or deliberately for more effect or punch. Strange as they may seem, oxymoron is part of our everyday speech.

They are used for a variety of purposes. Sometimes they are used to create emphasis. Sometimes people are just trying to be amusing and make others laugh.

A combination or mixture of two words with contradictory aspects and forming a meaning out of it. Oxymoron itself is ‘oxymoronic’ as it means sharp and dull. The contradictory words used in an oxymoron are placed side by side.

முரண்தொகை, புத்திசாலித்தனமாக பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட முரண்பட்ட சொல்லடுக்கு, நகைமுரண் 

 

Examples:

Bittersweet, wise-fool, legal murder, deafening silence, in a fools’ paradise, freezer-burn, honest thief, loud whisper, working vacations, etc.

The word is like a 'double-edged sharp knife or sword', in a pricking or humorous sense. But one has to be doubly careful and discreet while using it.

  

Example sentences:

 Urban naxal is something of an OXYMORON.

 Basically, a drug-free school is an OXYMORON  in some countries..
