FIT (FILL) THE BILL:
Meaning:
If someone or something FITS THE
BILL, they are exactly the right person or thing that is needed in a particular
situation - be appropriate and/or suitable for a particular purpose – to have
the qualities that someone needs or has asked for
Example sentences:
We wanted an experienced manager
and ‘X’ FITS THE BILL.
He is the right person for the
job. He will FIT THE BILL.
Does this restaurant FIT THE BILL
for our celebratins?
That piece of plywood will just
FIT THE BILL for our purpose.
He FILLS THE BILL for the job
that you were speaking about to me yesterday evening.
A guy who claimed that he FILLS
THE BILL for an important character role was however rejected by the theatre director.
MEND FENCES:
Meaning:
If you have a difficult
relationship with someone and you do something to try and improve it, you can
say that you are trying to MEND FENCES with them, or, MEND YOUR FENCES with
them – make peace with a person or group – to repair the damage to a friendship
or relationship after a disagreement or mishap – to re-establish friendly
relations with someone – to restore a position or reputation that has been
damaged
