‘CONTRONYM’

 

Pronunciation:  


Kaan-tra-nim (கான்ட்ரனிம்)

 

Meaning:


A word having two mutually contradictory meanings. Of course, they are rare.

 

These words, depending on the context, can have opposite or contradictory meanings too besides their core meaning. When using these words, we have to be careful and make sure the context clearly identifies which meaning you intend to convey:

 

Some typical examples are:

 

 

(01)              Bolt: To secure, or to flee

(02)              Bound: Heading to a destination, or restrained from movement

(03)              Buckle: To connect, or to break or collapse

(04)              Cleave: To adhere, or to separate

(05)              Clip: To fasten, or detach

(06)              Dike: A wall to prevent flooding, or a ditch

(07)              Discursive: Moving in an orderly fashion among topics,

       or proceeding aimlessly in a discussion

(08)              Dust: To add fine particles, or to remove them

(09)              Enjoin: To impose, or to prohibit

(10)              Finished: Completed, or ended or destroyed

(11)              Flog: To promote persistently, or to criticize or beat

(12)              Give out: To provide, or to stop because of a lack of supply

(13)              Go: To proceed or succeed, or to weaken or fail

(14)              Handicap: An advantage provided to ensure equality, or a

       disadvantage that prevents equal achievement

(15)              Lease: To offer property for rent, or to hold such property

          (Example:: I have given the lease of that property to ‘X’.

          or, I  have taken that property on lease from ‘X’)

(16)              Left: remained, or departed

(17)              Sanction: to approve, or to boycott

(18)              Weather: to withstand, or to wear away
