A SMARTPHONE IS A GREAT BOON
From Sampath’s Desk:
A SMARTPHONE IS A GREAT BOON
A telephone fixed to a particular location is a thing of the past with the advent of the technological wonder viz. mobile phone. A smartphone, in particular, is a hi-tech, feature-rich, multi-value added, and personalized/customized services packed apparatus and ‘carry anywhere anytime advanced communication tool’ for its holder, providing him/her with utility values of sorts. A smartphone enables mind-boggling speedy Audio, Image, and Data transmission, ushering in an era of exciting, comfortable, efficient, and mind-blowing communication in the fast globalizing era. Thanks to the 4, 5, and other higher version generation networks the world over and a galaxy of Smartphones, Android phones, iPhones, Blackberry phones, etc., one is able to run a virtual office from wherever he/she is. It is also the gateway, a passport, and an easy path to reach anywhere and at any anytime, though virtually. It also facilitates all digital transactions one wouldn't have even dreamt of earlier. Mobile technology has been able to leapfrog conventional hardware-intensive and hostile geographical terrains. Today, all-pervasive mobile connectivity and Information Technology have shrunk the whole world into a global village, bridging the whopping urban-rural digital divide making distances increasingly irrelevant. Wherever you are, communication is now possible. That mobile revolution in general and smartphone, in particular, has networked people into new lifestyles - at home, workplace, and elsewhere besides ensuring privacy and also providing wholesome entertainment.
The buzz
of mobile telephony is fast penetrating into rural sectors too. The explosion of
bandwidth, competitive tariff aimed at customer affordability, operational
efficiency, and a host of mind-boggling value-added services mark an ever-expanding and constantly exploding mobile market never seen before. A smartphone is virtually one’s
communication companion and partner, and more importantly, an ideal digital
organizer. It is also a tool for social networking and societal engineering.
On the
flip side, there is the possibility of you getting disturbed and annoyed even at inappropriate times by unwanted
quarters including mischief-mongers. Use of a cell phone while walking on traffic-prone busy roads/areas or
trekking has to be avoided. Talking
over mobile while driving a four-wheeler or two-wheeler, even hands-free, may distract your mind and divert your attention posing and proving to be a potential peril at times.
A smartphone albeit being a techno-digital-savvy magic tool is not an unmixed blessing going by the insalubrious effects of ‘high levels of microwave radiations’ through which it works that seem to be more alarming than generally perceived. Statistics-proven bio ill-effects of cell-phone talks for longer periods due to adverse fallouts of higher microwave radiations emitted by ubiquitous myriad towers in operation have been the subject matter of research and evaluation for quite some time. It is said that the high radiation levels generated by mobile towers may cause mild to moderate neurological problems in humans. Research analyses undertaken the world over point to a sickening and obnoxious domino effect on humans due to excessive use of smartphones. The presence of multi-private players necessarily means an indiscreet generation of more intense and higher levels of radiation on commercial considerations. And in the rat race of the commercial world, due to over-zeal or jealousy for market-capture in the mobile service sector, many private mobile service providers vie with one another in indiscriminately manipulating the radiation levels far beyond the threshold to leapfrog and/or pierce through concrete jungles for deeper in-building penetration to satisfy the ever-increasing needs of the customers.
The general public particularly mobile clientele has the right to know the plusses and
minuses of a product or service they avail of. Like in the case of statutory
warning given for tobacco use and smoking, and also alcohol, people using mobile are also
entitled to have the right of information on the levels of radiation or prolonged excessive exposure(s) that may lead to risks along with some kind of warning if one indulged in it excessively. Customers have
the right to ‘informed choice’. Such a right can’t be denied to them. A hassle-free, healthier and safer option is a wired phone, although nobody
is for it today.
Modern
cell phones are ‘all-in-one’ hand-held marvel gadgets that have replaced
cameras, degrees in photography, watches, calculators, torches, compasses,
mail, alarm clocks, audio/video records, calendars, personal assistants, MP3
players, radios, games consoles, TVs, TV remotes, computers, typewriters, pens
and paper, spell/grammar check, library, newspapers, magazines, GPS system and
maps - and simply what not? They enable virtual conferences, team meetings/coordination, and all
other concerted actions enabling 'effective work from home’. There are hardly any
transactions left that could not be carried out on a smartphone today. Far from
being a luxury item it was once, today it is an absolute and inevitable necessity.
A
feature-rich smartphone does the following additional functions:
Ø Internet connectivity.
Ø A mobile browser.
Ø The ability to sync more than one email account to a device.
Ø Embedded memory.
Ø A hardware or software-based QWERTY keyboard.
Ø Wireless synchronization with other devices such as laptop or
desktop computers.
Ø Ability to download applications and run them independently.
Ø Support for third-party applications.
Ø Ability to run multiple applications simultaneously.
Ø Wi-Fi and Bandwidth compatibility
Ø A digital camera typically with video capability
Ø Gaming.
Ø Unified messaging
Ø GPS
The merits of a smartphone far outweigh the demerits. Its advantages overwhelm a few disadvantages. A smartphone is thus a great BOON.
