FAIR-WEATHER FRIEND, ALL-WEATHER FRIEND and FOUL-WEATHER FRIEND:
From Sampath’s Desk:
FAIR-WEATHER FRIEND, ALL-WEATHER FRIEND & FOUL-WEATHER FRIEND:
FAIR-WEATHER FRIEND:
Meaning:
A person who is a faithful friend only when everything is going
well but who deserts you in times of difficulty – someone who only wants to be
your friend when things are fine and pleasant – one who supports others only when it is
easy and convenient to do so
Example sentences:
A FAIR-WEATHER FRIEND is a person who will be your friend only when
things are going well for you.
You can’t count on Mr. X to help you out when you are in trouble. He is
just a FAIR-WEATHER FRIEND.
I thought ‘Y’ and I had a strong friendship, but he turned out to
be just another FAIR-WEATHER FRIEND when he even stopped talking to me after I got into a financial crisis.
You cannot rely on FAIR-WEATHER FRIENDS to help you when you are in dire need.
ALL-WEATHER FRIEND:
Means a friend who helps you all the time and every time, either in
happiness or sorrow.
Example sentences:
China and Pakistan are ALL-WEATHER FRIENDS who don’t like
India to emerge as one of the superpowers and super-economies of the world.
He has always remained loyal to me through thick and thin; he is one of my
ALL-WEATHER FRIENDS.
Russia has been an ALL-WEATHER FRIEND of India.
FOUL-WEATHER FRIEND:
This expression is made with two different connotations as mentioned below:
A FOUL-WEATHER FRIEND only seeks you out if they have a
problem, need a shoulder to cry on, a ride to town, or someone to watch their
dog, but otherwise, they will act as if they don't even know you. They're only
your chum when they're glum.
A FOUL-WEATHER FRIEND is someone who likes to be around you when you are in trouble - say
unemployed, depressed, and in the dumps. He/she feels sorry for you and would hand
out advice, and gets some pleasure out of feeling superior to you, besides berating
you for having a bad attitude and/or negative aspects that landed you in trouble
making it appear as though he/she would not have made such mistakes. And once you
recover from the predicament or quagmire, they are not to be seen anywhere near.
(Since the term 'FOUL-WEATHER FRIEND' has connotations at least from two different angles, we have to be very careful while using it to fit the bill well)
Proverb:
சந்தைக்கு வந்தவர்கள் துணை ஆவாரா?
Will those who frequent
the same market aid as friends?
