LAY IT ON THICK:

Meaning:

If someone is LAYING IT ON THICK or IS LAYING IT ON, they are exaggerating, overdoing and/or over-embellishing a statement, experience or emotion in order to try to impress people - grossly exaggerate or overemphasize something – overstate or flatter effusively – to try to persuade someone that something (else) is better, bigger and more important than it really is – to praise someone too much

 

Example sentences:

 

‘X’ carries on as though flattering the boss will get him a promotion; so, he is always LAYING IT ON THICK for his boss.

 

I think he LAID IT ON A BIT THICK with all compliments.

 

She LAID IT ON THICK loudly crying and weeping when her pet died.

This is a rare poetic usage – William Shakespeare used this phrase in his works.

 

Meaning:

 

In an extremely comfortable position or situation - Very cozy, relaxed or friendly – warm comfort and contentment.

 

When someone gets in a very comfortable and safe position or place. Usually used to define in a funny way when the kid feels great laying in a bed to sleep.

 

Example sentences:

 

It will give you a way of running away from life, to dream, to be comfortable, etc., SNUG AS A BUG IN A RUG.

 

It is good to be inside when it is so cold outside. I feel SNUG AS A BUG IN A RUG.
