SUSHMA SWARAJ
From Sampath’s Desk:
SUSHMA SWARAJ
(14 February 1952 – 6
August 2019)
In the departure of the former Indian External Affairs Minister
Sushma Swaraj, one of the tallest and strongest pillars of modern women power has fallen. She was a great woman face in politics. An eminent
and towering stateswoman, she had dedicated herself to the service of people.
Shushmaji – a versatile personality being a daring and challenge-savvy veteran
leader, prolific and powerful orator, forcefully arguing lawyer, a ‘go-getter’
for her party,– all rolled into one - is no longer amongst us. Hers is an
irreparable loss to our country and her party.
With her passing away, a great saga of inspiring intellectual
patriotism besides her long, illustrious and industrious journey has come to an
end. She can be easily rated as the second tallest woman leader of the
country who reached peaks of name and fame after our former Prime Minister
Indira Gandhi. Incidentally, Sushmaji was the only second woman to be the
Indian Foreign Minister after the late PM. She was a popular national leader
after the characteristically charismatic crowd puller Indira Gandhi.
She had many 'firsts' to her credit like - a multi-faceted woman
incumbent, first female BJP Chief Minister, General Secretary, Leader of
the Opposition, an easily-accessible Central Minister, the only female MP
honoured with the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award, Delhi CM, Minister in
Haryana state, and 7-time winner in Lok Sabha elections. At a time when women
leaders were scarce and shying away from politics, she elegantly emerged as a
frontline national leader donning different hats.
She was a volcano of zeal, ocean of knowledge, Tsunami of
innovative ideas, icon of initiatives and topping it all, a symbol of
simplicity.
As Foreign Minister, she
became popular worldwide and maintained excellent rapport with her counterparts
and other world leaders. She has left behind a legacy of an
easily-accessible minister who readily extended her helping hands to the Indian
Diaspora in distress with her revolutionary social media outreach. Several
path-breaking measures such as the passport infrastructure expansion and
enhanced engagement with the East were the highlights of her tenure as the
External Affairs Minister.
Despite her failing
health and retirement from active political life, she was eager and conscious
to keep herself abreast and updated on the goings-on in the country and abroad.
Even very recently she tweeted on the J&K issue. She was in fine mettle and
kept herself informative till she was cruelly snatched away from our midst.
During her tenure as the External Affairs Minister, she had handled
several strategically-sensitive issues including Indo-Pak and India-China
relations. Her role in resolving the tricky and thorny Doklam standoff between
the Indian and Chinese sides will always be remembered. Though known to be
a tough fighter in the political battlefield, she was admired and respected
across party lines.
Sushma-ji will always be remembered by the people of India as one
of the greatest women leaders the country had ever produced, and also of course
as a great Mother, Sister and Daughter representing the Indian women
power (Naari Shakti) and Bharat Mata!
