T.M. SOUNDARARAJAN

(24.3.1922-25.5.2013)

A dynamic, electrifying, and mesmerizing yet flexible and adaptable voice that had reigned in the Tamil film industry has gone silent in the passing of T.M.Soundararajan, affectionately called TMS. He was a heartthrob of millions of music lovers and uncrowned emperor as a singer in the Tamil film world for well over five decades – one of the longest innings - singing for different famous yesterday actors. If the MGR-Sivaji period were the golden era of Tamil Cinema, TMS was one of the main pillars of that edifice. One of the characteristic features of his singing was that he would instinctively adjust (if not altogether change) his voice to suit the actors for whom he was singing and one could easily identify for whom he was lending his voice going by the tone and tenor.

TMS was synonymous with a dulcet and ever-green voice laced and embellished by apt modulations, improvisations, and variants of sorts. His songs couched in sweet yet assertive notes took listeners to a pinnacle of joy. In short, he was the darling of the Tamil music world. He donned the hat of an actor, producer, and director too.

A singer par excellence, his songs transcended times and even now are liked by youngsters too. His devotional songs melted the hearts of devotees. For he himself was an ardent devotee and sang devotional numbers with the reverence and veneration they deserved. The emotional heights and spiritual depths he touched were the typical and characteristic hallmarks of his renditions.

He reached out to all echelons of society through his multi-emotional and multi-dimensional numbers, many of them carrying philosophical and life lessons. His songs are sure to reverse one's sagging mood and morale.

Though his departure is an irreparable loss, his song collections will continue to influence and energize generations.

The lyricists, music directors, actors, and others who were associated with him were in no less measure contributive to his astounding success as an all-time great Tamil playback singer.
