VENKATARAMAN R
From Sampath’s Desk:
R.VENKATARAMAN
(4.12.1910-27.1.2009)
R.Venkataraman, former
President of India passed away on 27.1.2009 at the ripe age of 98.
Even though there was
scope for partisan political play, he went by the copybook refusing to budge
for the sake of interest groups or his own personal ambitions. RV's
years as President were marked as much by what he did not do as by what he
did.
He was a blend of a
lawyer, freedom fighter, Trade Union leader, eminent statesman, and doyen of
industrialization of Tamilnadu. As a Minister in the then Madras State (now
Tamil Nadu) headed by stalwart leaders like K.Kamaraj and M.Bhakthavatsalam, he
laid a strong foundation for mass industrialization of Tamilnadu. R.V. was in
the centre-stage of national politics for a fairly long time and had played important roles moving with several national leaders. As a Union Minister,
Vice-President, and finally, as President of India, he had carved a niche for
himself by conducting himself majestically as enjoined upon the highest post of
the country.
In his departure, the
nation has lost yet another link with the Gandhian era, a seasoned political
leader who was known for his simplicity, plain-speak and selfless service, and
who never relished to be in the glare of publicity.
