VETERAN COMEDY ACTRESS MANORAMA
From Sampath’s Desk:
VETERAN COMEDY ACTRESS MANORAMA
(26.5.1937-10.10.2015)
The tinsel world has become poorer by the passing of the
legendary, versatile, and iconic comedienne, Gopishantha, better
known by her stage name 'Manorama' in her hey-days, and thereafter as ‘Aachi’,
who had to her credit more than 1200 films and 1000 stage performances besides
her character roles in small screen serials. She gained entry into the
Guinness Book of World Records in 1985 for acting in more than 1000 films. She had also sung more than 300 songs. She had worked with five
Chief Ministers and at least four generations in the film world. She was a
rare yet right blend of comedian-cum-character actress.
.
Manorama, an actor nonpareil, spared no role to play during her
long eventful innings in the celluloid world, spanning well over six decades. More
than anything else, she had become synonymous with comedy in which she had
acquitted herself well and achieved fame with none to match her multi-role adeptness, relegating her contemporary comediennes far behind.
Sense of humour was ingrained in her. Her timing and manner of dialogue
delivery including body language and nuances of her facial expressions were a
shot in the arm for her to shine as an accomplished star comedienne for decades
together. No other comedy actress could endure such a long time in the cine
world as she did. Her histrionic experiences as a stage actor richly
contributed to her advancements and grand success in her film career.
Though basically a Tamil actor awarded Padma Shri in 2002, she had
also essayed roles in other language films such as Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
Her on-screen pairing with contemporary veteran comedians Nagesh, Cho Ramaswamy,
Thengai Srinivasan, and Surulirajan was well received by movie viewers. Such
films became very popular for their comedy stuff.
Manorama has left behind her inimitable and indelible imprint in all her roles.
Who could forget her performances in movies like Bommalattam, Thillana
Mohanambal, and Samsaaram Oru Minsaram – to mention a few - for both her
comedy and character roles? She had entertained and enthralled generations, who,
transcending the generation gap, acknowledged her supremacy as an all-time comedienne!
The saga of a great comedienne who made flutters for decades by her
soulful instantaneous laughter generating performances from the moment she
entered the shadow industry has come to an end! Humour world has lost its sheen
with her departure. The vacuum created by her passing is hard to fill.
