INDIA's PARALYMPICS PERFORMANCE AT TOKYO (2021)
From Sampath’s Desk:
INDIA's PARALYMPICS PERFORMANCE AT TOKYO (2021)
The 2020 PARALYMPICS (postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic) was
held in Tokyo between 24.8.2021 and 5.9.2021. The overall performance of
India’s 54-member contingent was excellent. It was a medal rainy season for
India there. What a great way for India to finish the Paralympics event
at Tokyo!
The nation felt proud of its boys and girls who clinched for the
first time ever in history a record double-digit tally of 19 medals (5 Gold, 8
Silver, and 6 Bronze). Kudos to them!
While the Indian mainland was experiencing heavy southwest monsoon
downpours, away at Tokyo, we had showers of medals greeting India.
Who said ‘They can’t'. Yes, they can. This was amply and
emphatically proved by our following differently-abled participants.

Indian medal-winning boys and girls, you have made India proud! The
nation and people feel proud of you!
The differently-abled people of India in general, and
the Paralympics medal winners in particular, have proved the
following points – The only disability in life is a bad attitude - please
understand I have a disability, not a disease - I may walk, talk and move
differently than you do, but on the inside, I am not too different.
Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing
well, you are needed by someone somewhere. There is ability in disability too.
It is not a disability, but a different ability.
More specifically, they have demonstrated to the world, “We would not change you for
the world, but we would change the world for you.”
When a disability strikes one, you have three choices – you can let
it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you. These
folks have obviously opted for the best third choice.
The never-before medals tally of India at the Tokyo
Paralympics was a shining example of ‘Yes, they can’. The Indian differently-abled athletes have
demonstrated that they can change the word and world for us.
Congrats and best wishes to them to have a bright future
and bring many more laurels to our motherland!
Last but not the least, let us listen to a differently-abled who
says, “Don’t judge me till you walk a mile in my shoes or live a day in my
life.”
