INDIA COMES OF AGE IN THE 2020 TOKYO OYMPICS HELD IN 2021
FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:
INDIA COMES OF AGE IN THE 2020 TOKYO OYMPICS HELD IN 2021
At the outset, Japan should be appreciated for holding the Olympic Games originally scheduled for 2020 but postponed to 2021, beginning 23.7.2021
even amid the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic without hiccups or hitches and got it
through smoothly.
India sent 119-member contingent to compete in 85 medal events
with the following takeaway:
India finished the event bagging 1 Gold, 2 Silver ad 4 Bronze
medals, a record performance for at least four decades.
India started its tally on 7th August 2021 when Haryana’s Golden Guy Neeraj Chopra scripted
history by clinching the first gold for India in Javelin throw.
The other six (2 silver and 4 bronze) medal winners were –
Silver by Haryana’s Mirabhai Chanu in Weight Lifting (49 kg women)
Silver by Haryana’s Ravi Kumar Dahiya in Wrestling (57 kg)
Bronze by Hyderabad’s (Telangana) PV Sindhu in Women Singles Badminton
Bronze by Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain’s in Women’s Welterweight Boxing
Bronze by the Indian Hockey Team (Men)
Bronze by Haryana’s Bajrang Punia in the Wrestling (65 kg).
In 2016, India had sent 117 players to Rio Olympics pinning hopes on winning 10-14 medals but clinched only two. Compared to that, India’s performance in Tokyo was really creditable and commendable.
Some of the Indian athletes/players/teams put up an excellent performance. But with
the luck unfortunately failing to favour, they missed the medal by a whisker.
Overall, India certainly came of age in the Olympics
performance in Tokyo. Congratulations to the medal winners and other contingent members
who had put up an excellent performance but missed the target.
The medal winners and other participants will surely be inspiring
India’s future generations in sports.
Competitive sport is not just the art of possible; rather it could
also be the ‘art of the impossible.' Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do
it.
Congratulations to all the Indian participants in the Tokyo Olympics
in general and the medal winners, in particular. Yes, you will surely be a
source of inspiration to many future aspirants.
