FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:
MUSIC
COMPOSER RAVINDRA JAIN
(28 February
1944-9 October 2015)
With the passing
of Ravindra Jain, a veteran music composer-cum-lyricist mainly of
the Hindi film world, an adventurous and inspirational successful journey of a
visually-impaired yet undaunted and indefatigable maverick has come to an
end.
Born to a Sanskrit Scholar father Pandit
Indramani Jain and poet-mother Kiran Jain, he evinced keen and
intrinsic interest in composing music even at a very early age of his life.
Who could forget the soulful music he had rendered for the great Indian epic TV-serial RAMAYAN produced by Ramanand Sagar? His
other popular works on the small screen included SHRI KRISHNA, JAI GANGA MAIYA,
JAI MAHALAXMI, SAI BABA, JAI HANUMAN and ALIF LAILA, besides many yesteryear big-screen
hit Hindi films.
Though he made his humble career
beginning early 1970’s as a music director for some Hindi films scoring
music for many popular numbers, he had to be in wilderness for some years
before he was given the much-needed come-back breakthrough by Raj Kapoor &
Co. for whom he composed super hit songs in movies like ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’,
‘Do Jasoos’ and ‘Henna’, after which he steadied and consolidated himself and
proved his enduring versatility as an accomplished and popular
music director, singer and lyricist - all rolled into one. Thereafter, he
continued to be a front-line music-director in the Bollywood having full and
matchless command over both devotional as well as film music.
He was the epitome of unwearied courage,
and spirited and tenacious performer despite being visually impaired.
South Indian singing sensation Dr.
K.J.Yesudas had a purple patch with Mr. Jain, who together produced
many memorable hit songs some of which got awards for the former.
Hailed by the Bollywood fraternity as a
‘genius music composer’ and affectionately called ‘Daddu’, he received the
Padma Shri award in 2015 for his contribution to arts besides a host of others.
Ravindra Jain has proved to
the world how one could reach the pinnacle of glory even in the face of odds. He
delighted millions of music lovers transcending generations
notwithstanding his vision-related challenges creating a niche for himself in
the Indian film world.
