VIOLIN VIRTUOSO LALGUDI JAYARAMAN

VIOLIN VIRTUOSO LALGUDI JAYARAMAN

(17 September 1930-22 April 2013)

A great saga of the plying, scintillating and regaling violin that was made by its master LALGUDI G. JAYARAMAN Sir to virtually sing with perfect sync and dance to his commands – either as a soloist or accompanist - much to the delight of the audience, has come to an end on 22.4.2013 with his passing, making the music world poorer.

He was also a vocalist and composer. He was considered as one among the violin-trinity along with MS Gopalakrishnan and TN Krishnan. The very word Lalgudi is today synonymous with the violin maestro. What else other than this could be a great tribute to him?

His genres of violin-playing - wholesome and unparalleled as they were - took the listeners to a crescendo of delight for at least six decades. A pathfinder of innovative ideas with new-wave initiatives and ground-breaking efforts with his stringed instrument, he had the musical stuff and substance in abundance. The niceties, nuances and subtleties varied according to the requirements of the main player - whether it was a vocalist or a main instrument player - and the sweetness of his accompaniment music proved to be a great value addition to the orchestra richly contributing to the overall ‘Kutchery’ performance.  He had carved a niche for himself in the Carnatic music world and was often the most-preferred choice as an accompanist by many renowned vocalists. He did ample justice to the role he took upon to himself and to the fullest satisfaction of the singers as well as listeners who he transported to a mesmerizing plane. On many occasions, he outwitted the main player with his violin performance and this fact was acknowledged by one and all. By his musical string, Lalgudi would make the stage sizzle leaving the audience breathless and exotic, taking them to the pinnacle of exultation. He took his soulful violin music set to many ‘ragas’ and ‘thalas’ to new horizons.

Yesteryear music stalwarts had their unique styles of renditions. Lalgudi Sir would easily feel the pulse of different vocalists/instrument players for whom he would be an accompanist, adapt to the situation, catch up with their wavelengths, and make his rich contributions by ensuring perfect synchronization with others in the troupe to enrich the content and spread the aura of the musical programs.
