CARRY THE CAN:

Meaning:

Take responsibility for a mistake or misdeed (even for one he/she did not cause) - if you carry the can for something that has gone wrong, you take the blame for it, even though you are not the only person responsible for it - to be the person considered responsible for something   

  

Example sentences:

 

It annoyed me that I was the only one who CARRIED THE CAN for that defeat.

 

Even though the whole team bungled and failed, only Mr. X was made to CARRY THE CAN.

 

As usual, I was left alone to CARRY THE CAN for the company’s mistake.

To make a very bad or embarrassing mistake - if you drop a brick, you say something tactless or inappropriate which upsets or offends other people – make an indiscreet or embarrassing remark - to unintentionally say or do something embarrassing, tactless, or indiscreet - to commit some social faux pas (mistake)  - reveal a startling information

He was about to DROP A BRICK on his parents by telling them that he was going to quit the law school and pursue a career in arts.
