CUCKOO

 FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:

CUCKOO

(Cuculidae)

( குயில்कोयल )

Cuckoo, you have a voice as sweet as honey;

That can never be bought or exchanged even for money;

Variants and sub-variants of your species are many;

It’s not an ordinary but a special music journey!

You all practice Brood Parasitism;

Laying your eggs in the nests of other birds with self-skepticism;

Making other birds hatch your chicks, attracting criticism;

With some deeming it as solecism!

For the Cuckoo, spring is the best weather;

The chicks are as clever as their biological mother;

They cry like young ones of crow and grab food from the mother Crow remaining tough as leather;

And, once they develop wings, they flee their foster mother’s home together!

You are a synonym for a good singer;

Who satiates people’s music hunger;

With the entertainment lingering longer;

And making them mentally stronger!

You seem to be ever happy - day and night;

On hearing your singing, one goes into delight;

Getting transported into a joy flight;

And making the listener forget all worries and plight!

Yes, you have great foresight;

Backed by a deep insight;

That’s the highlight;

Stealing the limelight!

  1. Cuckoo

    Your write-up reminds me of Wordsworth's famous poem "To The Cuckoo" and his immortal piece "The Solitary Reaper", where he elaborately deals with the Cuckoo-bird.

    While we all know quite a bit about the Cuckoo, your poem is very different and has a classic touch, which you seemed to have done effortlessly.

    In each para, you have highlighted at least one awesome characteristic of this bird. I feel you would have been in the woods, on the trees, in the fields, anywhere and everywhere (at least in your thoughts) to express your adoration for the darling of the spring. Yes, you have taken us back to our imaginary world of childhood days through our memory lane when anything and everything would mesmerize us.

    A nice poem dedicated to the Cuckoo which clearly displays your devotion and commitment to your passion.
