ELEPHANT
FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:
ELEPHANT
12 August - WORLD ELEPHANTS DAY
Who
can afford to miss the sight of an elephant’s majestic gait?
And
the buzz and tremors it makes on the earth due to its heavy weight;
Not
just children but even adults would like to witness its might;
Including
its regal, imposing, full-throated, ear-blasting trumpet!
The
Jumbo, you share with humans cognitive abilities of categorization;
And
shrewd and clever ways of interaction;
Your
herd has several types of internal communication;
Conversing
even through vibration!
The
Tusker, you are a good spirit and strength fountain;
And
obviously a mobile mountain;
You
have all the pristine qualities of the animals’ captain;
None
can displace you as the chieftain that is certain!
The
Pachyderm, you have almost no parallel in size and elegant shape;
Which
is the first of many feathers in your colourful cap;
You
are familiar with the forest landscape;
So
also with the waterscape!
The
Mammoth, your body is as solid as a wall;
You
are the world’s largest land animal;
The
gigantic figure you have overall;
That
especially makes children revel!
The
Mastodons, your trunk has a mélange of mad skill;
You
splurge in an overfill of joy in the forests, downhill, and uphill;
Once
in lush-green surroundings, it’s a windfall;
Of
sumptuous food for your stomach fill!
The
Giant Beast, you can swim across a river or watercourse, not sink;
Challenges
or stumbling blocks, you don't blink;
You
never sever your elders’ link;
In
order that your intelligence and wisdom don’t shrink!
The Forest Behemoth, you have strong physical and memory power;
Yes,
anyone and everyone can swear;
That
you are a royal and grandiose tower;
Enjoying
the expanses of the verdant cover!
The
Wild Colossus, you recognize sounds;
And
comply with the Mahout’s commands;
Your
pet choice is the greenlands;
None
can break the human-elephant alliance and bonds!
The
Forest Giant, you can hear
through your feet;
You
like sugarcane to eat;
No
wonder, you are a visual treat;
None
can deny that you are great!

As usual a fantastic piece. The different ways you have addressed the giant in each para is really a treat. Yes not only kids even elders are fascinated by them. One never misses not only to see the temple elephant but feed them too. Kids never miss to pet them though with a little fear fluttering through them!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Elephant
ReplyDeleteOne more beautiful poem. While I do love poetry, I am more in the camp of an admirer than a practitioner of this art. You write great poems to draw our attention and encourage us to contemplate with you.
Poetry is the highest expression of our language as we strive to choose the best words and put forth our ideas to speak to our generation.
It’s interesting to note thatin each para you have brought out one aspect or quality of the Elephant. We all probably know this. But its impressive to think that you articulated your thoughts in a poetic form. Not an easy task.
You have poured glory towards Elephants by addressing the Elephant with different names in each para - Elephant, Jumbo, Tusker, Pachyderm, Mammoth , Mastodons, Giant Beast, Forest Behemoth, Wild Colossus, Forest Giant .
Just proves that you are a good observer of Animals and are able to paint a portrait of it, with the use of masterful words.
Congratulations !!
Thanks Sampath ji
