SAROJINI NAIDU
FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:
SAROJINI NAIDU
(13 February 1879 – 2 March 1949)
A POEM ON A POET
‘Nightingale of India’ SAROJINI NAIDU was a versatile person;
Poet, multi-linguist, freedom fighter, and women's rights crusader - all rolled into
one;
Oeuvre of poetry, patriotism, and oration were ingrained in her to
inspire everyone;
‘The Golden Threshold’ and ‘In the Bazaars of Hyderabad’ are her masterpieces with ever-lasting shine!
Poetess-in-grand-style doesn’t need an elaborate introduction;
Had to her credit a treasure of write-up collection;
She was one who would never rest without reaching the destination;
Her achievements and glory were without limitation!
The national bard was one of the female frontrunners in public
life;
When women either shunned or were shunted out of the field, she took the knife and plunged herself;
Was the first female to make women realize they had more to do beyond home-life;
On principles and goals she was uncompromisingly tough and stiff!
The verse-maker touched millions of hearts with her timeless
compositions;
Did adorn many majestic positions;
Including as President of INC and Governor, Uttar Pradesh with
clear assertions;
Ignited fire of freedom in people through her soulful poems with results of far-reaching proportions!
For the rhymester, nationalism was the watchword;
‘Deeds, not just words’, the password;
‘Women Empowerment’ the keyword;
And, ‘Use your voice’ was the most often used buzzword!
The popular poetaster always stressed and focussed on unity;
Strove for women’s honour and dignity;
Blended tradition and cultural heritage with modernity;
Through her works she attained eternity!
Standing solidly for Motherland’s sovereignty and superiority;
The lyrical legend called upon people for hope, gratitude, and
integrity;
And, a bold mindset through her conscience-stirring
poems with clarity;
To fight the British Rule’s barbarity;
Contributed her might for nation’s freedom on top priority!
The marvelous magic metrist’s life itself was a reward;
It's for younger generations to take her legacy onward and forward;
And for whom there should be no bending backward;
Henceforward, everything will be frontward and upward!

Sarojini Naidu holds a special place in my heart, thanks to my dear Appa, who introduced her poems to us at a very tender age. "In the Bazaars of Hyderabad" was one of my favorites then, and even now. You will be surprised that I read it today also.
ReplyDeleteSampath ji, your ability to craft such elaborate poetry celebrating the essence of Sarojini Naidu, the "Nightingale of India," is truly commendable.
Your tributes serve as poignant reminders of the enduring legacy left by remarkable individuals like Sarojini Naidu.
