DIGITAL REVOLUTION
FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:
DIGITAL
REVOLUTION
While the digital revolution has eased transactions of sorts all across the world, still, the domain is not an unmixed blessing and has brought along some woes as well to grapple with. Basically, it has simplified transactions and considerably reduced the man-power. However, it has also made the man lazy if he chooses to. Physical activities that used to be the norm earlier are on the verge of disappearance, affecting human health as well.
The
many truly mind-blowing digital platforms, devices, and gadgets have brought
the greatest positive transformation never witnessed by the humankind by removing
the vexatious and long-experienced botherations, making the transactions easier and hassle-free
than ever before, which one would not have even dreamt of, the glaring example
is the online banking, specifically fund transfer and the UPI (Unified Payments
Interface) ecosystem. The mobile phone helps you virtually carry your bank
along. Unimaginable indeed!
Today, we tend to use a calculator to say 2 plus 2 is 4. We believe the digital gadget rather than our knowledge and what was physically taught to us by our teachers in the classrooms, including physical counting and/or counting in the mind.
With
communication and connectivity assuming never-before-witnessed mind-boggling contours,
physical meetings of persons have considerably reduced, almost hitting the rock
bottom.
How badly the digital revolution has crippled the physical human movement can be well gauged from the fact that we tend to talk even to our neighbour on a voice call or video call!
Even
children, who are supposed to indulge in a lot of intermingling, and physical movements and
exertions, like playing together, are getting enmeshed in the insalubrious
addiction to viewing mobile phones and/or Laptops for longer periods for their
entertainment purposes, almost keeping themselves immobile and without physical
exertions. A pitiable development indeed!
Parents, teachers, and elders should encourage the children to engage in a lot of physical activity. Personal interactions and group exercises heighten and widen one's physical and psychological horizons
There
is and can be no denying the fact that the so-called demerits, which are
manageable if wisdom prevails in those concerned, stand convincingly overwhelmed by the meritorious aspects of the transforming technological platform.
It also opens doors to hitherto uncharted avenues like the complete shift from Analog to Digital.
The current Digital World is characterized by Global Internet Usage, Technological advancements, including cashless transactions, Artificial Intelligence, speedy E-commerce growth, social media platforms, mind-blowing, speedy communication and connectivity, etc. With less and less currency notes in use, it helps conservation of natural resources and avoidance of depletion of green cover, which is essential to the maintenance of the ecosystem and the avoidance of environmental degradation. The positive ramifications of the fast-evolving ubiquitous technology with a new evolving landscape include convenience and security, financial inclusion, better education, healthcare, entertainment, clean workplace environment, instantaneous connectivity and communication, global reach, democratized knowledge, digital marketing, remote work and collaboration, increased transparency, improved efficiency, information flooding, mushrooming of online resources including digital libraries and archives, and the like, leading to new business models and modules, and easy and convenient ways of working and business.
India
accounts for a significant portion of global real-time payment transactions,
with UPI facilitating a large volume of digital transactions.
On the flip side, it has created the digital divide in the sense that a large chunk of the global population still remains offline in underdeveloped and developing countries. There are also oncerns about cybersecurity threats, some privacy issues, etc.
Needless
to say, the merits far outweigh the demerits. Digital revolution is truly a
boon, but it may turn into a blockade when misused, if not a bane altogether. So,
the digital regime is here to stay with us permanently.
The digital platform can be used for both constructive
and destructive purposes, as in the case of fire, which helps you cook food - a positive purpose - or destroy something,
which is a negative purpose. The discerning minds will certainly opt for the
former.
