WASTE - வீணடிப்பு / வீணடிக்கப்பட்ட- व्यर्थ / बेकार करना

 FROM SAMPATH’S DESK:

WASTE

 வீணடிப்பு / வீணடிக்கப்பட்ட

व्यर्थ / बेकार  करना

There are no hard and fast rules to define what makes waste. It depends upon individual and situational factors. You cannot strictly call a time just whiled away by one as ‘waste’. Don’t hurriedly jump to a conclusion. Your haste may make waste.

There are basically two wastages - material things and time.

I only wonder, in India, we serve too many food items on special occasions –Weddings and the like. Most people waste more food than they eat. Whenever I happen to see it, I will get saddened. There are so many people in this world who find it difficult to satiate their hunger. Such being the case, why waste? Both the servers and eaters behave indiscreetly. While the servers serve the items very fast and perfunctorily, giving no time for the eater to say that he/she required it or not (diabetics may reject sweet items). If you don’t waste food items, at least we can send them to an Orphanage or other shelter homes so that the hunger of many people can be fulfilled. Isn’t it?

The very word 'WASTE' says 'EAT', don't 'W(A)S(T)(E).

Some self-styled ‘grand/elite people’ think that leaving the eating plates/leaves empty after taking the meal is below their dignity. This is a false notion. I would not accept any item that I don’t want. Some servers are too fast to serve them on my leaf/plate. Perhaps, buffet is better where people can take only what they want to eat.

Again, water is God’s gift to mankind. Never waste water; rather, save it. During rainy seasons, we have to save water in dams, reservoirs, etc., at the macro-level, and through Water Harvesting Systems (WHS) in our houses at the micro-level. After using water, see that the taps are closed tightly. If a tap is faulty and water drips on a slender thread even after a tight closure, it necessarily requires repair. Get it done immediately.

At the international level, we do have disputes among countries on the sharing/distribution of water. Sometimes, it becomes the reason for even conflicts and wars. That highlights the importance of water.

The general rule to avoid waste of things is ‘REUSE, REDUCE, AND RECYCLE.’

Time is also too precious to be wasted.

To realize the value of time of –

One year – ask an examination candidate

One month – ask a salaried person

One day - ask a person in fasting

One hour – ask a waiting lover

One minute – ask a person who has missed a bus or train

One second – ask a person who has escaped from an accident

Every second counts. Stop wasting time.

A jovial quipping goes thus - What is education? - Wasting one quarter of your life to learn how to waste the rest of your lifetime?

Do you know who is a vidiot? He is one who plays video games most of the time and wastes time. The word is a combination of video and idiot.  A vidiot is also someone whose intelligence level has decreased because he has been constantly playing video games or watching too much TV. If you ask me, many young people ae vidiots.

The intelligent lot would advise and caution thus, “Don’t yield to adrenaline rush and/or desires, as nowadays, youngsters are seen wasting their time playing video-games on the big screen and small screen (mobile phones), although they are capable of scaling horizons on many fronts.”

Some people have Diarrhea of the mouth, which means there is a tendency among them to speak constantly or at length without thinking of the pros and cons. Don’t try to argue and explain too much to people who are not ready to listen. It’s simply a waste of time, as they are not going to accept it anyway.

It needs no overemphasis that you may live longer once you realize that any time spent being unhappy is wasted.

Let me conclude with the following quotes:

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

(Steve Jobs)

We say we waste time, but that is impossible. We waste ourselves.

(Alice Bloch)(

We must use time as a tool, not as a couch.

(John F Kennedy)

The quality of our life depends on the quality of our time management.

(Pujya Swami Chinmayananda)
